Lake Geneva cruise questions and answers
The questions people actually ask before booking a boat on Lac Léman, the Swiss lake at Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux. Answers use verified operator and tourism-board facts, nothing invented.
Is this Lake Geneva in Switzerland or in Wisconsin?
Switzerland. This site covers Lac Léman, the lake shared by Switzerland and France, with cruises from Geneva, Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux. It has nothing to do with Lake Geneva in Wisconsin, which is a separate US lake with its own operators.
What is the cheapest cruise?
The lowest entry point is the 50-minute scenic loop from Geneva, which starts at about CHF 20. It runs a short circuit past the Jet d'Eau and the city shoreline. The longer Riviera and Lavaux cruises cost more.
Does the Swiss Travel Pass cover the boats?
On the regular scheduled CGN lines, yes: the Swiss Travel Pass gives free travel. It does not cover special, dining or themed cruises, which are ticketed separately. The Half-Fare Card gives roughly 50 percent off the scheduled lines.
Does a cruise include entry to Château de Chillon?
No. CGN boats stop at the Chillon landing stage, but castle admission is a separate ticket unless a specific product clearly bundles it. Plan on buying entry on top of the boat fare.
When does the cruise season run?
The main season runs roughly from 25 April to mid-October. Winter service is reduced, and some of the paddle steamers are laid up until spring.
Do the Belle Époque paddle steamers still run?
Yes. CGN keeps 8 Belle Époque paddle steamers, the largest Belle Époque fleet on a lake, and 5 of them run tourist cruises in 2026, mostly across the summer. In winter most are docked.
Do I need a passport to cross to Évian or Yvoire?
Yes. Évian, Thonon and Yvoire are on the French shore, so the crossing leaves Switzerland and enters France. Carry a valid passport or national ID card.
Which cruise is best for the Lavaux vineyards?
The Lavaux terraces line the shore between Lausanne and Montreux, so a Lausanne-based Lavaux cruise or a steamer along the Riviera gives the best view from the water. The guides point to the specific listings.
How are prices shown?
Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF), the operator's own currency. The booking platform converts to your local currency at checkout, so the figure you pay may show in your own money.
Are the ratings real?
They are the platform's own ratings, read off the live listing. Where a rating or review count could not be verified twice, the site shows "reviews on the listing" instead of a number rather than guess.
